Nerdery Plans to Add 100 Local IT Jobs Over 5 years

The Nerdery, one of the country’s fastest-growing tech companies, has picked Kansas City as its third market for major growth.

The Minneapolis-based firm, which currently has 33 employees in Kansas City, announced this week that it will add another 100 high-paying jobs to its local staff over the next five years.

The planned expansion began in October, when the Nerdery’s Kansas City office relocated to larger digs as anchor tenant of the Western Union Building at 100 E. Seventh St.

“There is a lot of opportunity for The Nerdery in Kansas City,” said Tom O’Neill, president of The Nerdery, in a release. “With the great talent pool of potential Nerds and support network available to us, KC is an exceptional location to further our work here—and to further our vision to be the best place in the world for Nerds to work.”

The Nerdery was founded in 2003 in Minneapolis. In 2010, it opened an office in Chicago. Earlier this month, it announced the opening of a Phoenix office. The company’s more than 500 employees work with clients to develop customized interactive projects, including websites and mobile/social media apps.

The Nerdery’s enhanced presence in Kansas City includes a $4.3 million capital investment by the company and additional millions in salary for its rising workforce.

The Nerdery’s growth in Kansas City was facilitated by a lobbying effort that included the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City and the Kansas City Area Development Council.

“We had an amazing team come together that told our city’s story well and demonstrated the resources we have that meet The Nerdery’s needs,” said Pete Fullerton, CEO of the Economic Development Corporation.

Bob Marcusse, president and CEO of the Kansas City Area Development Council, agree.

“We are so proud of the regional partnership that made the case for The Nerdery to expand their KC office,” Marcusse said. “(The) announcement is one more example that Kansas City is a hot spot for innovative companies that want to attract and retain top IT and tech talent.”
